TOURISTIC AND HISTORICAL FACTS ABOUT TERNOPIL
We love Ternopil. In our opinion, Ternopil is a city that is just the perfect size. It has a population of approximately 250,000 residents. It is just big enough to offer all of the amenities of a large centre. Plus it is a mere 130 kilometers from the major centre of Lviv if one needs more variety.
On the other hand, it is small enough to keep it very cozy and approchable. The streets are remarkable clean and the city is very well maintained. It is obvious that there is a great sense of civic pride here. The sidewalks and roads are upkept and there are flowers planted everywhere. The perfect setting for a renatal by our lviv apartment company.
The most redeeming feature is the beautiful Lake that adorns the city centre. Reflected on it's surface are the ancient temples and castles of Ternopil - truly a sight to behold.
Founded in 1540, Ternopil first began as a military fortress and castle. It quickly became an important trade centre with warehouses storing goods that included the precarpathian salts that were mined here.
Like most centers in Ukraine, Ternopil has experienced a past filled with torment and tragedy. It was initially fortified to protect its' kingdom from the constant Tatar invasions.
As with most eastern cities in Ukraine, Ternopil changed borders and exchanged hands many times. This city has been at the wrong end of dozens of hostile takeovers. Before world war one, this area was ruled by Austria-Hungaria; after the war Poland governed the area.
Ternopil is one of the industrial centers in Ukraine and was built as a major railway transportation hub. One of the major battles in the Soviet Union was fought here to control the railway system.
All of these battles and struggles did not leave many architectural monuments standing in Ternopil. A few have withstood the test of time. Among the most famous are the Old Castle and the Dominican Polish Roman Catholic Church.
Ternopil has cosmopolitan flair, a city vibe! Here you will find people from all races and of different nationalities. This is because Ternopil is now a major center for higher education including two teacher's colleges, an international medical school (with instruction in English) and one of three economics institutes in Ukraine. This brings in an influx of international students which definately gives the city a colorful flavor.
The city seems to been growing as witnessed by the construction cranes and working crews seen in the center. However, many citizens are still forced to work abroad, and inflation continues to rise in difficult economic times.
Ternopil has so much to offer. It really is worth the trip to visit this fascinating city and its' surrounding area. Here you will find the same comfort and style as offered at all of our lviv apartments. It really is worth the trip.
